Best Healthy Travel Snacks

Dempsey and I have been traveling a lot lately (Spain, Mexico, New York, San Diego, and back and forth from LA to Boston!) And with traveling comes the dreaded “Travel Munchies.”  You know what we’re talking about.  You’re cooped up on a plane (or train or car) for hours and you start eating out of boredom.  Because we’re health conscious, we ~try~ not to let the Travel Munchies get the best of us.  That’s why we decided to come up with a list of our favorite travel-friendly snacks. These foods are easy to pack and don’t require refrigeration.  They’re also low in calories and perfect “Boredom Snacks.”

1. Clementines

These fruity snacks are great to pack for long-distance trips. They have a thick outer skin that keeps them fresh and unharmed if they accidentally get squished in your bag.  They are also small so you can pack a few to keep you satisfied during your travels.

2. Trail Mix

Trail mix is amazing because it can satisfy multiple cravings at once. I put nuts, dried fruit, seeds, and chocolate chips in my trail mix. I also love to add a low-calorie, high-fiber cereal or some popcorn into the mix. This increase the quantity and without loading up on calories.

3. Sliced Apples

Sliced apples are Dempsey’s go-to travel snack.  All you need to do is slice a few apples and splash them with a tiny bit of lemon juice and they will last for hours!  And they’re delicious!

4. Hummus and Carrots

Hummus is an excellent source of protein and can stay fresh for awhile without refrigeration!  Pair this with some carrots and you have a protein-packed, nutrient-rich snack!

5. Instant Oatmeal

Just add water! No matter your mode of transportation, it is pretty easy to get your hands on some hot water.  And voila!  Warm, savory, delicious oatmeal!

6. Edamame

Edamame…you really can’t go wrong with edamame. Buy them frozen and simply pop them in the microwave before your trip. They’re a perfect mindless-munching, guilt-free snack!  Just make sure to have a bag to put the pods in!
