5 Reasons You Should Sign Up For A Race!

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again—I used to HATE running.  It did not come easy to me and it was not fun.  That runner’s high that people talk about…yeah, that was definitely not happening.  For a while, I wasn’t sure how anyone could enjoy such a painful, difficult, nausea-inducing activity.  However, I did get to a point where I absolutely fell in love with the sport.  It didn’t happen overnight and it was not easy, but a major part of my success was working towards a goal—A RACE!  Races are amazing and so addicting.  Here are my 5 Reasons Why You Should Sign Up For A Race!

1. Motivation!

Signing up for any race—a fun run, 5k, 10k, half-marathon, marathon—is motivating.  It gives you a goal to work towards, a reason to lace up and hit the road.  I love running for how powerful it makes me feel, however, sometimes that just isn’t enough to push me out the door.  But, when I have a race on my calendar, it forces me to get out and get sweaty because I have an end goal in mind.

2. The Running Community.

I swear runners are some of the kindest, most inspiring, awesome people on the planet.  Whenever I show up at a race, it is amazing to see the vast array of runners competing.  So many different types of people are brought together by the love of running.  The sense of camaraderie at races is so exciting and inspirational.  I guarantee you’ll meet some amazing people!

3. Adrenaline.

Adrenaline is such an amazing, natural high.  I can still remember the rush of adrenaline I got before my first race (The Nike Women’s Half Marathon in San Francisco)…and I still get it before, during, and after all of the races I compete in.  The anticipation, the crowds, the mass start, the cheering—once you experience it, you’ll be hooked.

4. Confidence Booster.

Let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a good confidence booster?? I know I do! And races are a great way to accomplish that.  Not only will you feel super accomplished when you cross the finish line (you’re doing something that most people don’t do!), but you’ll also feel even better if people come out to cheer you on.  It really makes you realize how strong you are and how many people care about you!

5. Fun!

Races are some of the most fun events ever.  Whether you’re signed up to run a competitive marathon or registered for a “fun run” (like the super popular Color Run), I guarantee you’ll have a great time.  You may dread getting out of bed at 5:30 am on a weekend morning, but you won’t regret it.  AND if you sign up with friends, it’s even more of a guarantee that you’ll have fun!
